The first of three studio albums that tenor-saxophonist Sonny Rollins recorded for Impulse contains the joyous calypso Hold 'Em Joe and four unusual versions of standards in which the rhythms he plays are more important than the actual melodies. Joined by pianist Ray Bryant, bassist Walter Booker and drummer Mickey Roker, Rollins sounds quite distinctive on this brief but enjoyable set. This enjoyable outing (which has among its highlights eccentric versions of Blue Room and Three Little Words) was reissued on CD in 1997.
